A catalog is not a factory
This is the unromantic route from render to repeatable product: the process, minimum run, target cost, failure test, and regulatory tripwire for every Mycebo object.
01 / SEQUENCE
The website shows the product universe. The company should not manufacture the universe. Compare three non-ingestible candidates, prototype no more than two, and pilot one winner. Everything else stays backlog; Dose Zero remains on regulatory hold outside the launch program.
Give The Exhale, Night Dose, and The Dose comparable traffic, price-specific signals, comprehension interviews, claim-confusion checks, and refundable reservation tests.
Build 8–12 functional units of the top two. Measure function, safety, uncoached use, repeated use, and quote-backed contribution.
Build 25–50 beta units of one product. Target a 100–250-unit PO only after its 30-day retention, quality, legal, demand, and economics gates pass; a higher MOQ needs a signed exception.
02 / TARGET ECONOMICS
| Product | First process | Pilot MOQ | Planning COGS | Retail | Gross margin* |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Exhale | CNC-turn 316L, micro-drill/EDM, electropolish, passivate | 250–500 | $12–$22 | $79 | 72–85% |
| Night Dose | Custom cut-and-sew, weighted channel insert, washable cover | 300–500 | $9–$16 | $54 | 70–83% |
| The Dose | CNC 6061 aluminum, anodize, captured detent assembly | 250 | $12–$25 | $58 | 57–79% |
| Expectation Set | Fragrance house, 4 × 2 ml sprays, paperboard tray | 500 sets | $8–$14 | $38 | 63–79% |
| Last Light | Custom PCB, amber LED, certified PSU, weighted enclosure | 2,000 production | $25–$40 | $119 | 66–79% |
| Dose Zero | Research hold; process estimate only | 1,000–3,000 | $6–$8 | $28 | 71–79% |
| Expectation Machine | Deferred system concept | 250 | $40–$69 | $168 | 59–76% |
*Planning ranges, not supplier quotes. Product gross margin is shown only to expose assumptions; advancement uses contribution after payment fees, pick/pack, shipping subsidy, returns, warranty, and customer acquisition.
03 / BUILD SPEC
A monolithic or fully disassemblable 316L stainless breathing pendant whose restricted bore makes a long exhale easy to pace. The airway must be cleanable, burr-free, corrosion-resistant, and consistent from unit to unit.
| Stage | Process | Acceptance gate |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial design | Commission original geometry; search relevant patents and trade dress. Do not copy Komuso's internal architecture. | Distinct appearance, cleanable geometry, target airflow range. |
| Alpha, 10–20 | CNC-turn from certified 316L bar; EDM or micro-drill bore; deburr. | No sharp edge; gauge airflow; user comfort; no whistle that becomes intolerable. |
| Beta, 50 | Electropolish/passivate oral-contact surface; laser-mark; cleaning validation. | Material certificate, surface finish spec, bore variation within tolerance, corrosion and cleaning pass. |
| Pilot, 250–500 | Jewelry/medical-capable machine shop with lot records and final inspection. | 100% airway gauge; AQL cosmetic inspection; traceable lot; complaint and return tracking. |
| Scale, 5,000+ | Evaluate investment casting or metal injection molding plus finish machining. | Tooling payback without losing airway precision or surface quality. |
Comparable retail evidence: Komuso's Classic Shift currently occupies the $79+ breathing-pendant category. Scientific bridge: 2024 slow-paced-breathing meta-analysis. Neither validates the finished Mycebo design.
04 / BUILD SPEC
Use an experienced cut-and-sew shop, not a promotional-products broker. The architecture should create blackout and gentle distributed weight around brow and temples without direct eye pressure. Specify a removable insert and washable skin-contact cover.
| Component | Proposed construction | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Face side | OEKO-TEX cool-touch knit; dark colorfast dye. | Fiber-content documentation, rub/colorfastness, wash cycles. |
| Outer side | Warm brushed fabric with low-lint finish. | Pilling, shrinkage, skin-comfort panel. |
| Weight | Seven narrow sealed chambers; glass microbeads or food-grade ceramic beads. | Bead-containment abuse test, seam pull, weight tolerance. |
| Fit | Original strap/nose geometry; eye-clearance architecture. | Side/back sleeper test, blackout lux test, fit on varied head sizes. |
| Label | Fiber content, origin, responsible company/RN. | FTC textile-label review. |
Avoid cloning Nodpod's patented four-pod design. Comparable price anchors: Nodpod at $38 and Manta weighted mask at $89.
05 / BUILD SPEC
Two concentric 6061 aluminum bodies with four quiet detents. Each state must have distinct tactile indexing so the object works without looking. No loose magnets; no childlike visual language; no mechanism that rattles across a conference table.
Build oversized mechanism rigs first. Test spring force, detent depth, rotational torque, noise, debris tolerance, and 25,000 cycles before perfecting the sculpture.
6061 aluminum, bead-blast, Type II anodize, captured stainless spring-and-ball detent. Validate one-hand use, pocket wear, finish consistency, and whether the four states are understood without explanation.
Gauge dimensions, torque-test samples, inspect anodize, confirm the mechanism cannot release small parts under ordinary abuse, and serialize only after final assembly passes.
At 2,000+, compare optimized CNC, forged/CNC aluminum, and die-cast zinc. Add stainless or titanium only after demand proves the weight premium.
Adult tactile-tool price proof: ONO's current range spans roughly $28 plastic to $150 titanium. Safety guardrail: CPSC magnet warnings.
06 / WAVE 2
Brief a U.S. fragrance house for four layerable IFRA-compliant formulas. Require allergen documentation, safety substantiation, batch records, adverse-event SOP, and MoCRA/cosmetics counsel. Launch only 4 × 2 ml sprays; use conversion and full-bottle preference before committing to glass inventory.
Use USB-C power and a certified external supply: no lithium battery, radio, microphone, or sensor. Run EVT, DVT, 100-unit PVT, then production. Test thermal rise, tip/drop, EMC/FCC, photobiological safety, LED lifetime, and stuck-button failure.
Fragrance adds formula and cosmetics compliance; electronics add tooling, certification, warranty, and inventory exposure. They are attractive only after the first pilot winner proves paid, retained use.
2026 demand context: Global Wellness Institute identifies fragrance layering and embodied sensory ritual as current themes. Price anchors: Hatch Restore and Brick.
07 / REGULATORY GATE
An inert capsule does not cleanly qualify as a dietary supplement merely because it looks like one. FDA says a dietary supplement contains a dietary ingredient intended to supplement the diet. Zeebo's commercial existence is evidence of a niche—not a regulatory safe harbor.
Before any purchase order: obtain a written product-classification and labeling memo; have counsel review the bottle, website, testimonials, and social copy; confirm the contract manufacturer's legal basis and quality system; purchase product-liability coverage.
Primary guardrails: FDA dietary-supplement Q&A, FTC health advertising guidance. Fallback if classification is unattractive: a conventionally labeled RESET mint made by a qualified food co-packer.
08 / QUALITY SYSTEM
Frozen product specs and artwork, approved suppliers, signed quality agreements, hazard review, FTO/trademark screen, insurance, and documented acceptance criteria.
Material certificates/CoAs, incoming inspection, lot capture, dimension and cosmetic checks, quarantine until release, and retain samples.
FEFO inventory where relevant, serialized or lot-coded outbound records, complaint/adverse-event logs, deviations and CAPA, returns analysis, and written recall procedure.
09 / CASH + GATES
| Use | Planning range | Do not release until |
|---|---|---|
| Days 0–30 / demand, PRDs, claims/IP screens, RFQs | $3k–$6k | Three comparable demand tests and mandatory legal gates are complete. |
| Days 31–60 / no more than two alpha programs | $12k–$23k | Two candidates pass function, safety, repeated-use, and quote-backed economics. |
| Days 61–90 / one beta program and pilot readiness | $27k–$46k | One winner passes 30-day retention, supplier, quality, insurance, fulfillment, and PO gates. |
10 / NEXT 30 DAYS
Commission trademark screening for MYCEBO, MIEBO, ZEBO/ZEEBO, product names, and health-adjacent classes. Commission an FTO/design search for breathing-pendant and detent-object geometry.
One-page requirements for The Exhale, Night Dose, and The Dose: user job, dimensions, material, acceptance tests, target COGS, target price, and claim ceiling.
Three capable suppliers per product. Request 10/25/50 prototype, 100/250/500 pilot, and 2,000/5,000 scale quotes with tooling, samples, lead time, quality documentation, and Incoterms separated.
Mix target buyers, skeptical users, gift buyers, side sleepers, and people who already use adult tactile or breath tools. Do not select only friends who enjoy the premise.
Replace the email-only fallback before paid traffic. Capture product, stated price, source, campaign, completion, and verified contact; then run refundable deposits before inventory.
The commercial thesis
The defensible business is not “magical nothing.” It is an unusually honest design company that turns transitions into objects people enjoy using.
